Carbon offsets (capturing Carbon dioxide in plants or saving carbon from being emitted into the air) .

We capture carbon via long-lived marine plants which we restore so that they incorporate the carbon molecules from the air or ocean water into their plant tissue. Carbon offsets are becoming an increasingly popular way for individual people or businesses to participate in solutions to planetary climate change and to change the degradation of air and water and marine animals. The concept of carbon offsets is to calculate your personal contribution level in terms of the carbon you use to offset the effects of your carbon on the global warming or climate change problem. When you go about your everyday activities as driving, flying, or your home's energy use or even the food you eat, you are contributing to the planet's excess carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Your contribution a level of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere is known as your "carbon footprint." We each have carbon footprints depending on how much carbon dioxide our lives' many activities put into the air. For instance our lives can put carbon into the air by the heating or cooling choices we make and use, by the electricity we need by burning fuels such as petroleum, natural gas, wood, and other carbon-based or fossil fuels to create our electricity and heating or cooling. We make choices of food, of type of housing we live in, of our transport choices to and from work and other activities all of which have carbon emissions into the atmosphere attached to them. This is a way to say Thank you to mother nature and to compensate her for the carbon your life throws out.

The term carbon offset refers to carbon dioxide, the principal greenhouse gas CO2 which is a by-product of burning of fossil fuel. You can balance out your carbon footprint by buying carbon offsets. Your carbon offset purchased from us helps to eliminate the excess carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and in the ocean by incorporating the carbon dioxide into living plant material, which will keep the carbon within their tissues and roots for a very long time. The beauty of buying our carbon offsets is that one purchase does many other really good things simultaneously. It enhances biodiversity; it restores back to life impacted areas of the sea not presently functioning ; it increases fisheries particularly near shore; and it helps coastal villagers in poverty in developing nations have more fish to eat and feed their children, who desperately need fish---all at the same time, the same method and with your exact same donation as it fixes carbon in the marine plant tissue.

So The GCEEF strategy to offset your carbon footprint is a WIN-WIN strategy. By donating to our efforts you reduce excess carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and oceans in recognition of your burning of fossil fuel from your house, your transport, your electricity, etc. you participate in the world's attempt to balance out, or offset, each person's impact. You become a planetary citizen with personal responsibility for the environmental effects of your life activities and decisions. If you contribute $1500 or more, you will have a framed plaque for your wall .

As we each act everyday by commuting, living in our electrified homes and offices, purchasing items ranging from food to clothing to household goods, we tote up our carbon emissions which make up our individual footprint. The choices you make in how you travel, foods you eat (grown locally or far away, vegetables or beef), what you buy and throw out or recycle, what type and size of home we own or rent, what energy you use in your leisure time, and what type of electricity your power plants deliver to you are all part of your, your families' and your business's carbon footprint.

There are many things each of us, as individuals, can do to reduce our carbon emissions.

1.) YOU CAN DONATE TO OUR CARBON OFFSET PROJECTS OF RESTORING SEAGRASS AND MANGROVES IN TEXAS< FLORIDA<THE CARIBBEAN AND SOUTH AMERICA< ASIA OR AFRICA AND OFFSET YOUR CARBON while being a concerned and caring planetary citizen. This is the GCEEF plan and we have written it up for you to see. Go to the upper left part of the page and click in the boxes on GCEEF CARBON PROJECTS

2.) YOU CAN EXAMINE your lifestyle particularly the energy you use in your home, car or other travel mode, and in your work. You can also see if the food you eat is carbon efficient (vegetables grown locally are very efficient, meat transported long distance is very inefficient). You can do something about the items you purchase to see they are local and low carbon ( wood furniture is high carbon it came from a forest ), and synthetic clothing ( rayon, nylon, etc) is high carbon using petroleum as a base. You can recycle aluminum, plastic, glass, clothes, furniture, tools, and other items. THEN YOU CAN choose to CONSERVE CARBON BY CHANGING ELEMENTS OF YOUR LIFESTYLE. a lot of the things below help to conserve carbon. Many of these hints come from USA EPA.

3.)At home: Change lights to star lights; Look for ENERGY STAR qualified products in household appliances, and equipment; Heat and cool smartly energy efficiency properly sized; seal and insulate your home; Use green power; Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle , particularly make decisions about reducing your wants and demands; Use your water efficiently;

4.) For YOUR TRANSPORT : Buy smart -get a fuel efficient vehicle which does the job but does not over consume fuel; Drive smart do not get into idling traffic, keep steady smooth speeds; Tune your ride.; Give your car a break --Use public transportation, carpool or walk or bike whenever you can ; Use Renewable Fuels; conserve your travel. spend a day at home working from your home computer if you can.

5.) Actions You Can Take at the Office : Manage office equipment energy use better
--do not leave idling energy burners at night and over week-end; Look for ENERGY STAR qualified products for the Office; Ask the building manager if the building has earned a Energy STAR , provide him enthusiasm to get better equipment; Use less energy for your commute--Switch to public transportation, carpooling, biking, telecommuting and other innovative ways to save energy; Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
office paper, newspapers, beverage containers, electronic equipment and batteries.

6.) YOU CAN HELP OTHERS TO CHANGE THEIR CARBON FOOT PRINT. START WITH YOUR FAMILY. Mother, father, brothers or sisters, children, cousins, aunts, uncles. They all are contributing to carbon footprints.

7.) YOU CAN CONTACT YOUR LOCAL ELECTRIC UTILITY PLANT AND TELL THEM TO CONSERVE. Ask them if they have citizen discussion groups about conserving electricity.

8.) You can contact your local municipal officials and organize a discussion of how the electricity, city busses and transport and other city energy using devices could be cut minimized. This is a very important issue and should be an issue in elections.

NOW YOU ARE READY TO CALCULATE YOUR CARBON AND THEN COME BACK TO THIS SITE TO OFFSET YOUR CARBON IN THE WIN-WIN STRATEGY OF GCEEF carbon projects( see the tab on upper left BUY CARBON OFFSET. Remember to come back to buy your carbon offset once you calculate it. We sell offsets just as cheap and do four more things at the same time with the same money( enhance biodiversity, create more fish, employment for village fishermen, more fish for children in poverty to eat). Would you like to offset your carbon footprint now?

How many tonnes of carbon do you need?

carbon footprint calculator to measure your impact on our climate. Our carbon footprint calculator estimates how many tons of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases your choices create each year. more info

To get started, select the number of people in your home. Then choose whether you want to calculate a carbon footprint for yourself or for your household.

The best and most sustainable quality in offsetting your carbon would come in the answers to the following questions concerning permanence, additionally, leakage and standards (PALS) . Remember that our program not only gets high marks on these, but also does free of charge other important things, like enhancing biodiversity, creating more fisheries and helping with employment and fishing villagers in poverty around the world.

  • Will the project be permanent enough to continue to capture carbon into plant material over time and sequester (or store carbon) ? Yes all of our restorations projects are still around . Some after 30 years.
  • IF there are severe wind events or other natural disasters is there a reserve so that potential losses of carbon during these events will be buffered and stabilize after the event? yes. We have had hurricanes, tornadoes, decades of storms and know how to overcome their problems.
  •  Would the results of the project occur without this support and work by the experts? NO. The sites we choose have not been naturally healed for decades after the impact occurred. and NO we cannot have the workers restore without funding by you.
  • Would the project be carried out as a business-as-usual ? No each special site is chosen to do three things. a.) restore the carbon sequestering plants which will grow out and make a large area of habitat .b.) provide short term jobs for developing world people while we do the project and c.) create the habitat for fish nurseries, eggs of fish and invertebrates and other plants to enhance the biodiversity and fisheries of the selected area. These site otherwise would go untended.

Your carbon offset ideally would support projects that would not have happened anyway, and therefore are not business-as-usual. These include efforts to protect and reforest the edge of the seashore around the world and the underwater meadows, especially in the developing world of Latin America and the Caribbean, Asia and Africa where such practices are not business-as-usual. (Remember we do enhancing work on biodiversity and help very poor villagers as well.)

If the new carbon project is going to change the use of land from an old purpose to the new carbon storage purpose, is the old use of the land simply going to be displaced to an area that would have been forested?

Offset programs need to express what change takes place when the project is done and should have a satisfactory response to this question that takes into account agricultural and timber markets, land-use changes, and the likelihood that re-planting trees in one location would move farming or logging operations to another location up the road or across the country.

Standards of verification

. What third party is verifying the quality of the offsets and holding the supplier to a high standard?

  • How often will the project be measured and how will you the consumer be kept informed?

Groups like Voluntary Carbon Standard (VCS) developed standards for voluntary carbon offset projects. The approval of verifiers assessing a project against these standards can go a long way to assuring most buyers concerns are addressed.
